Hatebreed: Perserverance Pays Off

By Therese McKeon

Shoutweb: Before we move on, do you have any good Ozzfest tales to tell besides the day you weren't doing business and you passed out? (laughter)

Jamey: We had a day off in L.A. where somehow I ended up in Ozzy's daughter's car alone driving on Sunset Boulevard. It was without her because somehow we got split up at a club and I had the keys. There are all kinds of wild stories. That was all a blur. Someone gave me this picture... (pointing) that's me after throwing a drink in the face of the booking agent. They framed it because a lot of people don't like the guy but he's okay with me. That was one of the weird nights with many stories.

Shoutweb: Did you know all the bands going into Ozzfest?

Jamey: We knew Mudvayne and Slipknot. We also knew Nonpoint. We had played some scattered show with Nonpoint here or there. We didn't know anybody else.

Shoutweb: So there were opportunities for band bonding?

Jamey: We got along with everybody.

Shoutweb: By the way, I forgot to thank you for sending in your top ten records for 2001. I kept having to send messages with the word "Shoutweb" in the subject so people don't delete it.

Jamey: No problem.

Shoutweb: Kerry King sent me his and it was supposed to be the Top 10 and he wrote only four records I think. After the fourth one he wrote, "I'm sure there are others but I must refrain from giving undo props!" (laughter)

Jamey: (laughter) That sounds like him! He never says anything that doesn't need to be said. He's like, "Hey, what's up? How's the tour?" And he answers, "Very good. Thank you." That's it. "What was the best show?" He'll say, "I don't remember."

Shoutweb: Do we need talk any more about this artwork while we have it out?

Jamey: The back cover is the same thing only we're in front of flames with me holding those maces. It's pretty cool.

Shoutweb: So it's like a little torture chamber.

Jamey: No, it's like torched in flames! (thinking) That's an Earth Crisis song actually. Great song. Anyway, we're like rising from the flames. Pushing on through the flames. Persevering.

Shoutweb: And your hat has flames on it too.

Jamey: I think I am wearing this same hat.

Shoutweb: You're always wearing baseball hats. I want to know what *that's* all about.

Jamey: People will always ask me, "Take the hat off." In reviews you'll see people say, "You gotta see this band. The singer is always wearing a hat." I don't know. I guess people don't like hats.

Shoutweb: Well, not to compare you but... (laughter)

Jamey: I'm not balding, getting back to the Fred Durst comparisons! (laughter)

Shoutweb: I'm just wondering how big your collection is and if people come bearing gifts.

Jamey: No, no, no. No gifts. People brought cookies the other night. People bring gifts but not always for me.

Shoutweb: So there is no hidden message, no obsession with that hat?

Jamey: No, I just never have a good haircut.

Shoutweb: Are you mixing it up, wearing it some shows and not at others?

Jamey: No, I only did it once in Buffalo. And maybe once in Europe because, you know, it's Europe! It was in a basement or something.

Shoutweb: No photographers there, huh? (laughter)

Jamey: (laughter) Wait till you see the new press photo. I'm breaking out the hair.

Shoutweb: I'm going to have to ask you to remove the hat if I do a photo shoot.

Jamey: Do we have to? (laughter)

Shoutweb: Yes.

Jamey: (heavy sigh) Alright, alright.

Shoutweb: You just told me that we can't use any shots from the last six months!

Jamey: I can send you great shots. I got some good stuff. I have Dean Karr shots that aren't printed yet. We put some up on our site.

Shoutweb: Kids can go there already and see it. I don't want that stuff.

Jamey: We have ones that aren't on the site. We have some exclusive stuff.

Shoutweb: Well, send me some good stuff.

Jamey: Although, I did get one hate mail about the Dean Karr shots. Some kid said, "Why are you doing a photo shoot? That's gay." I guess they don't want us to have photos. You can't please everybody.

Shoutweb: You are on the computer all the time?

Jamey: I really try to read everything but it's hard. I get so much e-mail. My computer is so slow. There are some sites that I go to and my computer just freezes.

Shoutweb: So, on this tour, what is the set list looking like?

Jamey: We're playing "Remain Nameless", "Unbreakable" which is now known as "Judgment Strikes", "Proven", "Unloved", and tonight I think we'll probably do "Below The Bottom" too.

Shoutweb: You guys have been to Europe once but were supposed to go two other times that got cancelled.

Jamey: We went with Sepultura and we did our own little ten days headlining dates on our days off. It was awesome.

Shoutweb: But Sepultura got dropped.

Jamey: Yeah, that sucks. But they'll be okay on another label I'm sure.

Shoutweb: Maybe they'll go on Stillborn?

Jamey: Yeah, right. I don't think I can do the job that they need me to do. If Roadrunner wasn't doing the job then I don't know if I can. That would be cool though. Sign all the bands that I listened to growing up.

Shoutweb: You did the vocals on their record for "Human Cause". What happened with that?

Jamey: I cursed the record and made them get dropped. (laughter)

Shoutweb: Really. I see. (laughter)

Jamey: Steve Evetts had produced our record and he produced their record. We had played with them before and knew them sorta, kinda. It was awesome. I was psyched. He was like, "I'm going to talk to them about having you do something on the record." So he hooked it up and I went to New York. Igor and Derrick were there. Jay came with me. We rocked it out. It's just a quick one-verse type thing but a lot of people told me that they really liked the song. I did it with them almost every night on tour both in the U.S. and in Europe. It was cool. We changed it up for the live show. We made it longer. It was awesome. When I had their posters on my wall from whatever ripped pages of a magazine, I didn't ever think that I would sing on their album and be hanging out with Igor. So, that was cool.
