Hatebreed: Perserverance Pays Off

By Therese McKeon

Shoutweb: You were out with Amen for a while.

Jamey: We did a string of dates with them and they were on Tattoo The Earth also. The "Scumbags Across America" Tour never happened because we didn't have any tour support and we didn't have a vehicle. It was a nightmare. We had to blow it out. It sucked. We're going to make up that tour one day hopefully. If they have something new coming out and they're going to tour, we'll do some dates with them.

Shoutweb: After this, where are you?

Jamey: We're out the whole year. We're just all over the place.

Shoutweb: (laughter) That's a lot of touring!

Jamey: We go out with Slayer through the end of February. Then we start February 26th in like Indiana somewhere with Bane. We go February 26th to March 4th with Bane. That's being announced this week. Then we're off for two days. The record comes out at the end of March and we're doing all sorts of listening parties, in-stores, and record release shows. On that Bane tour, we're going to do something cool like give away samplers at the shows.

Shoutweb: You'd better invite me!

Jamey: Definitely. The record release shows are with Converge but we're also going to try to hook up with the bands we know. That goes until the end of April. Then I think after that is Europe and then there are talks of Japan. Then there are talks of Slipknot possibly going out again. Then there are Ozzfest talks and a lot of big tours in the summer. There's so much.

Shoutweb: Are you going to get to Australia and New Zealand?

Jamey: I think so. If we're going to go to Japan then we might as well do a Pacific Rim tour. I'd rather break up the flights. I hate flying. We all hate flying. We'd rather do Hawaii, then take two days off and fly back.

Shoutweb: Home video?

Jamey: Yeah, DVD home video. We did all these shoots. I think kids were confused about it. All the shoots were for a home video. We wanted to capture the energy and vibe of the live show. We wanted pits and circle pits going. We did them at small places and packed them out. We have a ton of footage for that from the last four years. That's all going to go on a DVD. I hope to get something out by next summer or early fall. That's what we're shooting for. I think it's realistic. We're also talked about putting together a bonus thing for when you buy the CD. Who knows?

Shoutweb: Any talk of a video for the record?

Jamey: We were going to shoot a video for "I Will Be Heard" but I don't know about that yet.

Shoutweb: Have you spoken to directors?

Jamey: I like Dean Karr a lot. He's my man. I talked to him. He's in Maui with Iron Maiden.

Shoutweb: Poor guy.

Jamey: I also have a good friend of mine, Dale, who did my movie "The Hip-Hop Witch" which is like a spoof on the Blair Witch. He's done some footage for us. He'll probably do our videos. We want an EPK. We're going to do some editing and getting some new footage for that.

Shoutweb: Will people be able to see that on the website?

Jamey: I think so.

Shoutweb: You have a lot to do. What are you doing sitting here? (laughter)

Jamey: I know, right? (laughter)

Shoutweb: And what is happening with your own web site?

Jamey: It's getting moved to JameyJasta.com. I get so many demos and so much stuff. I want to try to do stuff with that. Some of it, I don't have time to listen to at all. Some of the stuff is great. Some of the stuff isn't great. I want to try to do a public A&R forum. I think that's the most productive and constructive thing to do because I get so much stuff. If I have enough time, I'll probably add interviews and release dates. I mainly want to focus on the smaller bands that I like. I get so many hits now. I'm really surprised.

Shoutweb: So, what advice to have to bands starting out?

Jamey: You go to know what you want and you got to be able to do what you go to do to get it. A lot of people out there have the best of intentions but they don't want to follow through all the way. A lot of times, you have to do a lot of work that sucks. That's what it's going to take. If there's places you don't want to go and there's people you don't want to see and there's things you don't want to do then don't start a band. You have to have the outlook that you have to do whatever it takes. Have as many people exposed to your music and your lyrics. There are some who will say, "Send your demo to every major label and hope you land something." You have to go out and you have to tour. You have to send your stuff out. If you hate going to the post office and you hate carting mail, then it's not your ball of wax. You have to be prepared to go through 25 different $200 cars, and different $500 vans and be stuck places with no food, nowhere to stay, and having distance, distance relatives send you money.

Shoutweb: So, you have to have perseverance?

Jamey: That's right. You got to keep on. It's funny because there's people saying, "Isn't that a generic name?" Well, there are people that say we're a generic band so there you go.

Shoutweb: Well, whatever they think, at least you've tried to answer some of the questions people have. Thanks Jamey and have a great tour!

Jamey: No problem. Anytime. Thanks for the interview.
