Back To School: Lessons Learned At Warped Tour 2006
Raceway Park  •  Englishtown, NJ
August 6, 2006

by Therese McKeon

We know many of you are back at school and wishing you were still at Warped Tour so we thought we give you a refresher course in recap fashion on all that you should have picked up at Warped Tour. Didn't think you would learn anything? See if you can apply some of these lessons.

Get There Early

Just like with school, there are definite advantages to getting into the venue early. Some bands actually do hang out in the early hours still setting up their merch booths or just cruising through on scooters.

Get The Schedule

Know where your favorite bands are playing and just when they are hitting the stage. A map is also helpful so you know your Volcom and Vagrants from your Ernie Ball and Kevin Says. Keeping it plugged in with Cingular Wireless updates means you'll never be late for class again.

Speak The Truth... Or Not

Stopping in and talking to Sean at The Truth organization may have helped those rebel bands who refuse to listen to all the warning signs.

Make New Friends

Whether it's using DJ the reliable security guard as your scout for flying bottles or new bands you have never met before, you need to be making new friends and getting to know the other people with whom you'll be spending the day.

If it's band bonding your after, heading to the band merch tents or signings at the various sponsored tents gets you your fill. If you have the cash to spend after visiting those then you have plenty of shopping options at all the vendor booths hocking their wares.

Know the Location of the Nearest Medic Station

There is no doubt Warped Tour can be brutal and the closer you venture to the center of the main stages the more you are at risk for getting plummeled. It's much easier than finding your way to the nurse's office.

Learn to Take Cover and Duck Often

Throwing bottles seems to be a ritual that did not die with the caveman. One observation is that it only appears to be considered fun for those on the outer edges of the crowd who take great joy in feeding the frolicking frenzy. When in doubt, see LESSON 5.

Recess

Whether it's trying out your skills at the MLB batting cage or joining the adventuresome skateboarders on the ramp, be sure to get your game face on. It can be as challenging as you choose to make it.

Being one of the few venues where you can actually get from one stage to another in time for the set of the bands you really want to see, there is no excuse for not hauling it from stage to stage. You don't have to plant yourself in front of the same stage all day although that is certainly the most logical move on the minds of many moshers.

Do Your Homework

There are many ways to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Warped Tour from volunteering, interning, to actually earning yourself some pocket lettuce. If you need to come in costume, do it large.

Get Your Groove On

Desperate times call for desperate measures but of course there is a right way and the really, really wrong way...

Give It Away For Free

When it gets to be that time, you have to know when to cut your losses and give it away for nothing.
