Finding Sanctuary In A Dust Bowl
Warped Tour Hits Randall's Island, NYC
Warped Tour (New York, NY): The Vans Warped Tour blew through New York's Randall's Island, stirring up huge amounts of dust under sweltering sno-cone friendly temperatures that reached 110 degrees.

The day's highlights included mosh till you drop sets from Avenged Sevenfold, Thrice, Story Of The Year, Boys Night Out, Atreyu, and My Chemical Romance who brought out lead singer Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday on "Helena". The Volcom stage hosted UK imports Funeral For A Friend who pulled a double-header performing first at Warped Tour and then again later that night at punk institute of America CBGB in lower Manhattan.

Old school become new school as The Transplants took the stage with Tim Armstrong planting himself on the kick drum keeping rebellion alive for the Warped Tour and reality TV audience alike. Older school cleaned up when The Offspring delivered memorable favorites that every age could sing along to while the cooling sundown approached.

Ice Ice Baby: The ice man cometh and the ice man keepth on going... Finding cold beverages was one of the keys to staying heat stroke free.          Warped Tour Randall's Island 101: The Art of the Bandana
If you thought those were a new band called the Outlawed Cowboys you were dead wrong. The bandana is your friend. Keeping the whirling dust storm out of your facial orifices means less trips to the doctor's office for the dirt that has gathered inside your lungs.
MyOasisSpace: They don't call it "my space" for nothing! The MySpace tent was an oasis in the desert providing much needed shade, a slight breeze from oscillating fans, and all your Warped Tour needs including free bags, MySpace temporary tattoos, pins, and a stage schedule with band names and their set times. But no, there was no sight of Tom.          The Ice Cream Man: A very popular fellow indeed. That is, next to the Sno-Cone Girl and the Bottled Water booth crew. Staying hydrated on the hottest day of the year meant downing lots of water and sitting out on the mosh pit on every other band.

In The Wake Of Determination

Animated Story Of The Year vocalist Dan Marsala dropped by at Warped Tour on Randall's Island for a Shoutweb visit to fill us in on the new release In The Wake Of Determination due out October 11th.

Shoutweb: How has the success of Page Avenue you changed you or has it not changed you?
Dan: It's awesome to have fans. I am sure we didn’t have too many fans back then. I mean, we are still the same nerdy guys. I think we will always be the same dudes. It’s a lot easier to do a show when everybody knows all the words and they are singing, and everybody has all this energy. It's awesome. We never expected this many people to like our band. It was a shock to everyone. And now we are in the process of getting the second record out. It's done being recorded and should be out pretty soon. So we'll see if that one will do good too.

Shoutweb: Can you share some background on the new record?
Dan: We started probably late-December, early-January of this year. We had been on tour for probably two years straight so it felt good to just sit around for a bit and relax. Then we started, and the whole thing took about five, six months to write and record everything. So we had been off for a while, but we just wanted to make sure that we got a record that felt like more like our band. I mean, last time the record was a little too polished I think, and it didn’t sound like us live and this time we were going more for that live-feel. There is a little more energy in this record, and it is more guitar driven. It’s a little heavier than the last one, and we are really happy with it. It’s going to come out October 11th, it’s called In The Wake Of Determination.

Shoutweb: From speaking to you in the past, you are a big hardcore fan, and it sounds like you are going more in that direction.
Dan: Mitts from Madball is right over there, and he was up on stage. I was all excited. So yeah, it has a little more of a hardcore influence, but it still has the same feel with just a little more of what we wanted to do.

Shoutweb: Is this your second straight year of Warped Tour?
Dan: Actually, it's our third full year. We have been on the main stage this year and last year, the year before that we did Volcom and Ernie Ball stage and stuff.

Shoutweb: Is it kind of a given for you then that Warped Tour is home for you? Like when it comes up to do it or not, you will always decide to go for it.
Dan: Kind of yeah, because there are so many fans. I mean there are like 15 thousand people here everyday, so it is the best place to get new fans, and your own fans. It's always really good, all the bands are always really good. It’s a fun tour. Then we are off for a little bit, we are filming the first video for our first single, which is called, "We Don't Care Anymore." Then we are doing a headlining tour with Funeral For A Friend and Berlin and He Is Legend. That is in late-September, early-October.

Shoutweb: Will you describe that first single a little bit?
Dan: Yeah, it's called, "We Don't Care Anymore". It's kind of doing things for yourself, doing things the way you want to do it. It’s kind of about the music industry and we just realized that we don’t really care about things. We just wanted to play music for ourselves and the people that care for our music. To have fun and not think too much about this whole thing that's going on. Just have a good time with everything, so it’s kind of about that. The verses have this weird chunky, I don’t know everybody says it sounds like a Metallica mixed with a weird Story Of The Year. It’s a little bit heavier than the other singles have been, not too much heavier, but a little more rock. We just went for a straight rock feel this time. No like crying over our girlfriends breaking up or something, you know, it's just a good rock song I think.

Shoutweb: How has the success changed your personal life or personal relationships?
Dan: I got married almost exactly a year ago, well actually, three of us are married now. One is engaged and the other one is thinking about it. He's getting there. We are like total nerds. We have all had our girlfriends since we were like 17-years-old, and we are not like the band who goes and chicks or anything. We just hangout on the bus and stick to ourselves. It’s kind of better that way.

Shoutweb: It could all go away tomorrow and you'd still be happy?
Dan: Exactly, yeah, I mean it could all go away and we'd go home and hangout with our wives. Actually we all have houses now, that's the best thing that has happened. Yeah, it’s cool that doing what we love to do bought us houses. So that's a great thing.
