|
| June 24,
2003 |
The Mars Volta - De-loused In The Comatorium Although coming from the ashes of At The Drive In, The Mars Volta’s De-loused In The Comatorium is a record that has much more in common with great epic recordings from Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin than those of their predecessor. The Mars Volta unveil an hour-long odyssey that is grandiose, operatic, surreal, and unlike anything that has infiltrated the rock scene in some time. With help from producer Rick Rubin (System Of A Down), The Mars Volta have created a textured audio tapestry that delves deep into the psyche and obliterates the requisite formulas, structures and sounds that most of today's bands utilize. A truly transcendent work of art, and at times utterly mindblowing, De-loused In The Comatorium is the best album released so far this year.
Beloved - Failure On North Carolina’s melodic hardcore outfit Beloved have quickly progressed since releasing last year’s raw and memorable EP, The Running. Teaming with artful sonic producer GGGarth Richardson, the man behind Chevelle’s fluid Wonder What’s Next, Beloved have assembled a dynamic record in the form of Failure On. Refined and potent, the swift and poetic effort contains the same heartfelt angst found on the band’s EP, but delivered in an evolved epic style. At a time when everyone is trying to find different ways to marry melodic vocals and hardcore sound, Beloved do it with ease, integrity and flawless execution.
