Scott, Nate, and Chris love old thrash but nothing like that was coming out anymore so they decided to start a band of their own on Halloween night 2001. About six month’s later guitarist Ben, formally of Upheaval (on Eulogy and Willowtip), was asked to join the band and that’s when the guys started to get serious about the project. Fast forward to 2005, the bands self-released EP caught the attention Metal Blade Records and landed them the coveted record deal they had been working so hard to obtain. Since the bands inception they have already played with the likes of Exodus, Malevolent Creation, Extol, King Diamond, The Black Dahlia Murder, Obituary, and played the main stage at the infamous New England Hardcore and Metal Fest where they won over the audience with their brand of no frills metal.

Building a history of walking away from calamity unscathed time after time, and leaving the masses wondering how this is possible. "This was always meant to fall apart" serves as a tangible relic commemorating this history. The fact that the new record is led by a new voice further reiterates a sense of tribute to a troubled past, while also serving as chapter one in a new testament. This is a reincarnation of
Scarlet, and one that has not forgotten the knowledge of its former lives. This is an iron vein injected with new blood.
This Was Always Meant To Fall Apart is a collection of 12 epic sonatas complete with the classic chaotic screaming style and the addition of a newer, pushed forward singing style. In 37 minutes it becomes clear that
Scarlet is a whole new monster, demonstrating that within new blood, there are new tricks. Artist:

Producer: Alex Newport (At The Drive In, The Locust)
Label: Epitaph
Classification: Hardcore / Progressive / Punk
Media: Label
Site
Details: With Heaven’s Pregnant Teens, Some Girls’ first release on Epitaph Records, the group has honed its white knuckled assault down to 25 minutes of unrelenting musical psychosis while adding new dimensions of brutality to their now-trademark thrash attack. Throughout the album’s thirteen tracks, complex time changes invert riffs on their heads as layers of guitars trample each other before spreading out into electrified tendrils. Bassist Justin Pearson’s fuck fuzz-soaked bass and drummer Sal Gallegos’ unremitting percussive attack provide a manic backdrop to singer Wes Eisold’s frantic caged dog vocal assailments. In short, it’s a musical mindfuck. From the cannon shot intro of the album’s crushing opener “Beautiful Rune” to the death drone of its nine-minute closing suite “Deathwish,” Heaven’s Pregnant Teens is a document of five twisted musical minds making the most gloriously deranged noise producer Alex Newport (At The Drive In, The Locust, Sepultura) could commit to tape. Waterdown
Release: All Riot
Label: Victory
Classification: Hardcore / Post Hardcore / Screamo
Media: Label
Site - Myspace
Details: Waterdown formed in
2000 in the town of
Osnabruck
,
Germany
where they dedicated themselves to finding the perfect mixture of explosive,
TNT-fueled hardcore, dark metal and melodic punk. The result is blasting walls
of metallic guitars and ferocity slammed up against hooky melodicism and
ambitious time signatures, melding together into an emotive sub-genre that is
uniquely Waterdown’s. The six-piece band has two singers delivering wildly
divergent vocals, one screaming in rage while the second‘s soaring melodies
tie them both to the band’s crushing breakdowns and unique dynamics. After
releasing two albums on Victory Records, 2001’s Never
Kill A Boy On The First Date and 2003’s The
Files You Have On Me, Waterdown is back with their pummeling third
album, All Riot. Skratch Magazine
wrote that, “… Waterdown stuffs Snapcase-esque staccato with
the cunning musical arrangements of Refused, without sacrificing heaviness or
melodicism." All Riot will
appeal to fans of post-hardcore with a political bite.

Band Of The Week: Allele
|
| 11 November 2005 |
 Band
Of The Week: Allele
Single: "Closer To Habit"
Album: Point Of Origin (in stores now)
Music: Media
Player - Myspace
In the cookie cutter world of Modern Rock, artists come and go, most without ever leaving so much as a stain. That makes it all the more special when a band comes along and throws off every doubter’s expectation, connecting with fans on a musical, if not spiritual, level. That is certainly the case with
Jacksonville’s Allele (pronounced Uh-Leel), as the Florida 5 piece has been tearing up stages across the US for the past 3 years, alongside major artists like Saliva, Yellowcard, Nonpoint, Staind, Sevendust, Earshot, Trapt, Shinedown, Socialburn, 12 Stones and Godhead, along the way building a devoted family of rabid followers.
As the Allele Army grew exponentially, the band formed in 2002 by vocalist Wally Wood and guitarist Lane Maverick (who had previously been one of the first guitar players for Otep), got an even bigger shot in the arm when they recruited recently departed Cold guitarist Kelly Hayes, who had previously dabbled with Allele on a side project basis. Hayes, who had grown increasingly disenfranchised with his role in Cold, looked to Allele as a fresh, new creative outlet.
Around this time, the band’s buzz caught the ear of Corporate Punishment Records president Thom Hazaert, a longtime Cold fan/associate, who had been involved with the band, and Kelly for almost a decade (he even sports a tattoo of the Cold spider on his hand.) After two meetings a deal was struck, and the band went to work on their debut LP Point of Origin, with new drummer Giancarlo Autenzio and bassist Tim Tobin in tow.
Point of Origin is 10 jarring tracks of sonic weaponry and emotional release, from the stunning album opener "Fake", to the first single "Closer to Habit", that is quickly becoming a staple at Active Rock radio, to "Jaydin’s Song" the beautifully textured instrumental "hidden track".
Recorded at Cleveland’s Spider Studios with producer Ben Schigel (Chimaira, Drowning Pool, Breaking Point, Rikets) Point of Origin shows many sides of this complex, young ensemble, and will assuredly guarantee them a spot in the hearts and CD collections of Rock fans, and on radio playlists, for years to come.
Singer Wood puts it best. "I want Allele to be in every single person’s musical vocabulary. We have a message of unity we want to share with everyone."
The band has rapidly progressed towards those goals with their first single and video steadily beginning an assault on the airwaves, and a rigorous tour schedule taking them through the new year, with clubs, not arenas at the top of the list.
"We’d be happy just to pack clubs. I humbly think that we won’t become an icon thing. That’s rare. That’s when music was to be innovated and you can no longer innovate because it’s all been done. I think the time of being an icon is over. Obviously, I would love to get to a point where our band could headline arenas, who
wouldn’t? But that is such a huge goal. I would be happy headlining a 500 person venue, six days a week. That would be the greatest thing to us. If God had a sense of humor, and we were selling out arenas, I wouldn’t even know what to say." |

album’s release, signing copies of all three variant covers of The Triptych

album’s first single in Los Angeles.

Vaux Parts Ways With Atlantic/Lava
|
| 28 October 2005 |
An announcement to our fans, friends and family. Vaux has parted ways with Atlantic/Lava Records.
Currently we are in the midst of the “separation process” with the label and are awaiting the outcome. This includes regaining ownership of our album “Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice” that was scheduled for a November 8th release date. With all that has recently happened there is no “official” release date for the album, but we feel very confident that we will get the album back and be able to put it into the hands of our fans very soon. Despite all that has happened, the band is tighter than ever and feels very positive about the situation. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and we look forward to seeing you on the road. For more information on VAUX and to hear some of the new songs visit vauxrock.com, purevolume.com/vaux, and myspace.com/vauxSincerely, Ryder, Quentin, Greg, Joe, Adam, Chris |
On The Record: 30 Seconds To Mars - A Beautiful Lie Exclusive
|
| 26 October 2005 |
With their sophomore record A Beautiful Lie, frontman Jared Leto, brother and drummer Shannon Leto, guitarist Tomo Milicevic and bassist Matt Wachter break away from the fold of expendable novice acts to make a firm bid for rock supremacy. Not that their first album, 2002's self-titled gem was a shabby or poorly constructed effort, afterall, it did house the hit "Capricorn," it's just that 30STM have now unearthed a rawer and more cunning beast. Gone are the somewhat over-cooked synths and in their stead live an organic, undaunted communication of the human condition. The likes of which reinstate faith in the art form known as rock today.

New Music: Thrice - Vheissu
|
| 15 October 2005 |
It can often be a treacherous leap when bands make a bold change in style and scope. In the case of
Thrice, where the respectable
The Artist In The Ambulance was a solid screamo post-hardcore release, Vheissu
is a prolific and daring album. The sometimes cliché style that coated the band’s previous endeavors is out, ushered in is a moody,
atmospheric style all their own. The first single "Image Of The Invisible" represents the transition from old to new, featuring the staple Thrice sound and
hints at new experimentation. From there Thrice dives into much deeper waters, especially on the new song "The Earth Is Shattering" which features an eerie chain gang and stirring sonic backdrops.
Songs like "Atlantic" and "For Miles" create such a broad, deeply moving experience. Where some modern bands would borrow heavily from newly infused inspirations,
the popular one today being Muse, Thrice have painted a familiar, yet inventive new musical world.
Although it is a difficult record to pull comparisons from, think Dredg, A
Perfect Circle, Mogwai, Deftones’ White Pony, Jimmy Eat World’s Futures and Sigur Rós all thrown together in a blender. Thrice have defined their new sound, a place that none of their many copycats will even be able to come close to.
Vheissu is Thrice’s modern masterpiece and one of the best albums of 2005.

New Music: Against Me! - Searching For A Former Clarity
|
| 06 September 2005 |
 As
the opening guitar lines of “Violence” commence, an anticipation and urgency
slowly builds. When singer Tom Gabel starts in with the first lines “Lock the
door to your room / pray they don’t find us / pray they don’t kick it
down” you can hear a certain, almost, desperate conviction. By the time the
chorus kicks in, “What could we have done / to deserve a violence like this”
it starts to hit you. The mesmerizing solo creeps in and the tension, the pure
angst hits you like a ton of bricks. Songs like “Violence” are rare; pure,
painfully emotionally and utterly commanding.
In 2003, Against Me!
dropped the much-lauded effort, As The Eternal Cowboy. The short and
potent album brought the major labels sniffing, looking to acquire the band as
their next incubated commodity. Despite the reported offers, Against Me! shunned
the temptations, opting to trudge on with mainstay punk label Fat Wreck.
As The Eternal Cowboy gave a glimpse into the future of Against Me!, a
more refined and direct offering than the gritty LP Reinventing
Axel Rose. With Searching For A Rumored Clarity, Against Me! have
crafted their most prolific and urgent material to date, an album that builds
upon their punk rock roots and holds true to the band’s admirable ideals.
“Unprotected Sex With Multiple Partners” fires from all cylinders with
the epic anthemic echoing chorus “On the inside / on the inside / do you want
to know how it feels on the inside”. The upbeat groove of ’Unprotected’ kicks
in and moves like a fiery punk version of Franz Ferdinand’s "Take Me Out."
The song is a brutally honest tale about the trials and tribulations of the
inner workings of the music business. This is a good song for those 15 year old
punk kids that type on message boards about how a band "sold out," having
no concept of the difficulty of weaving your way through the weasels of the
music biz while keeping a grip on your integrity.
From the politically charged “From Her Lips To God’s Ears,” to the
themes of internal struggle found within "How Low" and the gut-wrenching
reality of "Searching For A Former Clarity," Against Me! have
delivered one of the most powerful and important rock albums of the year. Searching
For A Former Clarity is a daunting disc that bleeds honesty, pain, confliction, tension and relevance. Against Me! said it best with the title of track 11 on Searching For A Former Clarity: "Even At Our Worst We’re Still Better Than Most." Downloads

New Music: 30 Seconds To Mars - A Beautiful Lie
|
| 29 August 2005 |
 The
atmospheric sound of 30
Seconds to Mars has re-surfaced in the form of the band's sophomore set, A Beautiful Lie. Building on the well manicured sound of 30STM's self-titled disc, the sonically powerful new album is chock full of many memorable moments. Launching with "Attack," 30 Seconds To
Mars takes a very refined approach, mapping out a song that shows off the band's best qualities with an anthemic, dynamic chorus and frontman Jared Leto's eerie, encompassing vocals. There is an obvious attention to detail in the songwriting this time around, though be it never repetitive in nature. "Attack"
may be a very obvious track, but the majority of the record is much more sedated and dreamlike. Tracks like “From Yesterday” and “Was It A Dream?”
showcase 30 Seconds To Mars' alluring ability to paint a moody, endearing
musical landscape. The withdrawing vibe of the record brings to mind The Tea
Party's Transmission or something that might come out of Ken Andrews
(Failure, ON, Year Of The Rabbit). Imagine the soundtrack to getting lost in the oblivion of a black hole. The understated, yet overpowering sound of 30 Seconds To Mars is a welcomed departure from the usual in-your-face affair of today’s rock scene. If you want a record that you can put on and get lost in, or something to play during those somber, introspective moments, go no further than A Beautiful Lie. |

Vaux Unleash New Live Cut, Studio Footage
|
| 23 August 2005 |
Vaux
have added a live recording of the new song "Cocaine James" to Purevolume.
The song is taken from their upcoming new album, Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice,
out on October 25th on Lava Records.
Vaux’s Ryder Robinson had this to say regarding the live show recorded in Boulder , CO at The Fox:
"The band was really looking forward to the show at the Fox. It had been a while since
we’d played last and we’d been trying to book a show at that venue for years because the sound is incredible. The bands on the bill and the crowd were great. It really made for a memorable show that
I’m glad we got down on tape. In leading up to the release of our upcoming full-length,
we’ll be giving away live tracks recorded at this show, and will be releasing video as well.
Watch for more updates soon, and enjoy ’Cocaine James’ (live)."
Vaux have relaunched their official web site, vauxrock.com, with video footage from their recording sessions in England featuring the brand new track "Burn The Bandwagon".
You can also pick up the first single "Are You With Me" at iTunes. |
New Music: Every Time I Die - Gutter Phenomenon
|
| 23 August 2005 |
Every Time I Die
unleash their seething new disc, Gutter Phenomenon, on Ferret Music.
Never ones to pull any punches, the latest decadent debacle from the Buffalo
quintet builds upon the foundation of the classic Hot Damn! and delivers a
searing rock n’ roll assault.
The danger and destruction of Every Time I Die has been mainlined into one
potent package of concentrated chaos. Where Hot Damn! featured many memorable
moments and riffs, Gutter Phenomenon is a more realized undertaking,
sewing together all of the attitude and volatile elements into one meticulously
arranged and involving experience.
“Kill The Music” is a gyrating, fast-paced onslaught of destructively
beautiful guitar licks with an enthralling chorus by
Gerard Way
of My Chemical Romance thrown in for good measure. The Southern-cooked classic
“The New Black” features Every Time I Die at their very best, smacking
together addictive grooves into one of the year’s best rockers. “Champing At
The Bit” is another standout with ETID vocalist Keith Buckley sharing the mic
with Daryl Palumbo of Glassjaw/Head Automatic, making for a rather compelling
combination.
Gutter Phenomenon embodies the urgency, overindulgence and progressive
nature of rock n’ roll at its most pure. Where many bands out there play it
safe and write songs by-the-numbers, Every Time I Die strive to move the bar and
inject their music with some soul. Gutter Phenomenon, although not a
masterpiece from start to finish, is a necessity for anyone desperate to find
music that isn’t tainted, derivative or straight up knocked-off. If you need
some music with teeth, if you want to dip into a sound that caters to your lust
for aural debauchery, take a trip to the shady side of town with Gutter
Phenomenon. |

The Used Tour: Glassjaw Sidelined, H20 Tapped To Fill Void
|
| 08 August 2005 |
Glassjaw, who only recently defied rumors of a break up by committing themselves as the main support act on the upcoming tour with
The Used, have had to withdraw from the tour due to singer Daryl Palumbo’s on going battle with Crohn’s Disease. Palumbo has been suffering from Crohn’s since childhood and it has wreaked havoc on the dynamic singer’s personal and professional life. For more information on Crohn’s see:
http://www.ccfa.org. The Used will be donating some proceeds from merchandise sales from the tour to help offset some of Palumbo’s medical costs.
H2O has committed to replace Glassjaw on the trek, which will now begin August 19 in San Jose. The first 4 dates of the tour (8/13 Colorado Springs, 8/15 Albuquerque, 8/16 Las Cruces, 8/18 Reno) have been cancelled due to the Glassjaw cancellation and the inability to fill the main support slot at this late of a notice.
Seminal New York punk band H2O, formed in New York City in 1994, have been purveyors of hardcore and have built a tremendous following over the years. Says The Used’s Branden Steineckert of the situation, “we wish Daryl well soon, and we know how disappointed he is to be missing this tour. He’s a great friend and we’ll miss him out there.” As for the addition of H20 Steineckert had this to say, “I have fucking loved H20 for a long time they are legendary in the hardcore scene and the guys in the band are great friends, we can’t wait to play shows with them!”
30 Seconds To Mars is also making the trip. The Street Drum Corps who just finished the Vans Warped Tour will also be playing all the dates. The final opening slot on the tour is being filled by a variety of different bands including New Transit Direction, Broke and Day of Contempt (see below).

Roadrunner United - The All-Star Sessions: 57 Artists, 45 Bands, 19 Tracks, 4 Team Captains
|
| 03 August 2005 |
Roadrunner
Records has put together a groundbreaking record to mark the label’s 25 th
Anniversary. The group is
called Roadrunner United and the album titled The All-Star Sessions. This full length release, in stores on October 11, 2005, is a
‘master-class’ in hard rock/metal. Boasting 57 artists from 45 of Roadrunner’s past and present bands, the album will
contain original tracks that are collaborations between numerous
Roadrunner stars.
Four central musicians
were originally chosen to produce and write the songs. Joey Jordison (Slipknot),
Dino Cazares (ex-Fear Factory/Brujeria), Robert Flynn (Machine Head) and Matthew Heafy
(Trivium). These four musicians play on the songs they have written and have
also assembled a unique team of artists to appear on each track.
In order to cover as wide a spectrum as possible, no musician has
played for more than one writer/producer and each song features a
different vocalist.
In
addition to these stellar teams of musicians, there will also be special
additional tracks from ex-Roadrunner artist, Josh Silver - Type O Negative's
longtime producer / keyboardist. In
the spirit of the project, Silver has included Roadrunner artists on his tracks
as well… Opeth’s Mikael
Akerfeldt appears on the Silver-written “Roads.”
Track
names from the Jordison team include “Constitution Down” (with vocals by
Kyle Thomas of Floodgate), “Tired ‘N Lonely” (with vocals from Keith
Caputo of Life of Agony) and “Annihilation By The Hand Of God” (with vocals
from Glen Benton of Deicide) among others.
Flynn’s camp has completed
songs like “The Dagger” (with vocals from Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage)
and “The Rich Man” (with vocals from Corey Taylor of Slipknot) among others.
“The End” (with vocals from Matt Heafy of Trivium) and “The
Enemy” (with vocals from Mark Hunter of Chimaira) are some of the team-Cazares
product. And tracks from Heafy’s
sessions include “The Dawn of a Golden Age” (with vocals from Dani Filth of
Cradle of Filth), “Superheroes” (with vocals from Michale Graves of The
Misfits) and “Blood and Flames” (with vocals from Jesse Leach – ex-Killswitch
Engage singer).

Preview: Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw
|
| 25 July 2005 |
 The
cinematic sound of Chicago visionaries
Pelican is
back on The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw. The sprawling
landscapes of Pelican’s latest opus are commanding and consuming, containing an
instrumental heaviness that is harrowing, yet hopeful at the same time.
In the same vein as ISIS, with a more ethereal vibe comparable to Sigur Rós and Mogwai, The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw serves as compelling background music, i.e. you’re sick of that Final Fantasy game music, or as a demanding, riveting and colossal foreground experience.
Delivered with brilliant execution, the awe-inspiring musicianship of Pelican and their continuing quest to push the boundaries of aggressive ambient music is both admirable and simply something that should be experienced. It is hard not to be swept away in the ocean that is Pelican.

Preview: Fight Paris - Paradise, Found
|
| 25 July 2005 |
Paradise,
Found, the Trustkill debut from the Atlanta, GA outfit Fight
Paris, sounds like the backdrop to a hazy, toxin-fueled evening on the town.
Sparing no expense in their attempt to put sex and snarling attitude back into
rock n’ roll, their soundtrack of sin pulsates with crushing guitars on tracks
like "Complete Heat" and "Deville." Fight Paris exhibit the same menacing qualities that make The Bronx and Every Time I Die so urgent and invigorating, with a little Henry Rollins circa Black Flag thrown in for good measure.
Without going into fitting, and we must admit tempting, pornographic
analogies, Fight Paris is an overindulgent, and well overdue band that fully embraces that which is sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. If you like dangerous rock n’ roll that feels like the equivalent to way too many shots of tequila, you will feel right at home with Fight Paris.

Preview: Chiodos - All’s Well That Ends Well
|
| 25 July 2005 |
 Commencing
with an eerie piano intro, the A.D.D. / crack rock of Chiodos
kicks into gear with the penetrating chaos of "All Nereids Beware."
The leadoff track, which was our gateway-track from their days as the Chiodos
Bros., is even more jarring than its previous incarnation. When listening to
Chiodos and their Equal Vision offering All’s Well That Ends Well, it
would be easy to compare them to The Blood Brothers, and at some points Underoath, with their abrupt time
signatures and quick changes. Vocally, singer Craig Owens shares a resemblance with John Gourley of Anatomy Of A Ghost, with a bit of Johnny Whitney of the Blood Brothers mixed in. Comparisons aside, Chiodos artfully piece together complex, and constantly shifting sounds into colorful puzzle that somehow seems to fit, feeling like a composition inspired by one of Picasso’s most abstract works.
Trying to sum up the new Chiodos record, and its every detail, would be like
trying to create cliff notes for War And Peace.
If you are up for a challenge, try and follow the manic screamo/emo musings of Chiodos. One
person’s art is another person’s trash, there is not much middle ground with
Chiodos. You will either enjoy the bumpy ride or use it as your next coaster.

Preview: Boys Night Out - Trainwreck
|
| 25 July 2005 |
Boys Night Out issued their full-length
Make Yourself Sick in September of 2003. At the time it stood out as one of the better screamo type records out there. In the days that have passed since its release, the world has become inundated and saturated
with thousands of bands that mix whining, screaming and crying. BNO were one of
the few bands that actually pulled it off in a legitimate manner without making
it feel utterly insincere.
Now just short of two years since dropping Make Yourself Sick, Boys Night Out have taken an ambitious,
and much appreciated turn with their epic undertaking, Trainwreck. There are few bands in the screamo/emo/whatever world, if any, that could pull off an album as lofty as Trainwreck. Boys Night Out embrace their inner Pink
Floyd (and The Mars Volta), creating an oddly unique and varied record. It is
not to say that the old Boys Night Out has completely been purged, there are
certainly familiar elements in tracks like "Medicating" and
"Sentencing," but the clichés that embody most of the bands in the
modern "punk" scene are removed. In there place (*gasp*) is a wealth
of new ideas and experimentations. Whether it be the sweeping and grandiose cut
"Composing" or the daunting offering "Dying", there is a lot
to sink your teeth into with Trainwreck. Sit down, open your ears and your mind, and give Trainwreck a good listen.

Preview: A Perfect Murder - Strength Through Vengeance
|
| 22 July 2005 |
A
Perfect Murder is back with their latest bruising offering for Victory
Records, Strength Through Vengeance. Kicking off with the title track, it
is quite evident that the formidable metal onslaught of A Perfect Murder has not dissipated with time, rather aged like a fine wine (that not so coincidentally looks like blood). The trudging style of Strength Through Vengeance is permeated with thick, southern-cooked riffs and a methodical, slow-cooked style. At first the guitar work may seem one-dimensional, but once you start to really delve into the album it engulfs you into its murky undertow, not letting go until the last lick, in a similar fashion to Mastodon’s classic Leviathan. Thrash, hardcore and southern sludge is stirred together into a stewing offering on Strength
Through Vengeance.

New Music: Coheed And Cambria - "Welcome Home"
|
| 17 July 2005 |
Coheed
and Cambria will return on September 20th with the release of their latest
opus, Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV: Volume 1. From Fear Through
the Eyes of Madness. Coheed has made available their monumental new single
"Welcome Home." Where some bands would play it safe with their first
single back, Coheed has unleashed a 6-minute epic that recalls Led Zeppelin's
"Kashmir." Check out the new e-card
for a preview.
The upcoming album is also the first half of the third installment of the band's daringly ambitious prog-rock/sci-fi opus recounting the exploits of young Claudio Kilgannon, who is out to avenge the death of his three siblings and parents (Coheed and Cambria). The saga began with the band's 2002 debut, Second Stage Turbine Blade, and will eventually end with a prequel, where the fans will find out how it really began. Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV: Volume 1 has a twist, though: This one steps outside the story and focuses on the writer
of the tale, and how the goings-on in his own life affect the outcome of the
story he's in the midst of telling. |

Tour: Head Automatica On The Road
|
| 08 July 2005 |
Head
Automatica, the brainchild of Glassjaw’s creative force Daryl Palumbo, is
bringing its distinctive sound to a town near you.
Whatever you do, don’t call it a studio side project. "We’re straight-up
a family," Palumbo says of the live incarnation of Head Automatica-Gorman
(drums), Jim Greer (keyboards), Josh Holden (bass), and Craig Bonich and Brandon
Arnovick (guitars)-which allows Palumbo to be the flamboyant frontman he’s
always hinted at in his previous band. "We’re an electronic cock-rock band,
so you’re going to get a good show and it’s going to sound stellar."
It’s not ego, it’s confidence; and the music on Head Automatica’s Decadence backs this claim. With Palumbo’s self-assured voice as the unifying factor, Head Automatica seamlessly combines rock ’n’ roll’s visceral energy with slamming
beats and tales of sex-fueled escapades.

Interview: Life Of Agony - Phoenix Rising
|
| 07 July 2005 |

Read our interview with Life of Agony by Cathy A. Campagna, the person the band credits for getting the original line-up back together.
Coming from the streets of New York City in the '90s, Life Of Agony instantaneously built a devoted following with their debut The River Runs Red, a record tapping the hardcore vein with an angst and sludgy needle. But singer Keith Caputo, guitarist and cousin Joey Z, bassist Alan Robert and drummer Sal Abruscato moved into a more melodious although just as intense ocean with Ugly. Sal left the band, and was replaced by Dan Richardson [ex-Pro-Pain], and Life Of Agony went on to even plusher soundscapes by releasing the introspective Soul Searching Sun, then OZZfest came calling. Unfortunately the crooning frontman, Caputo, departed but the band soldiered on with former Ugly Kid Joe and later Medication vocalist Whitfield Crane. Sadly, a force that appealed to so many on a personal level and garnished tours with such heavy-hitters Ozzy Osbourne and Korn ceased to exist.
Joey Z did re-emerge with Stereomud, Alan with Among Thieves, Keith with his solo career and Sal, one time Type O Negative stickman, had Super Massive. Then in early 2004, the thirsty masses once again drank from a lost, but always revered nectar. Life Of Agony with its original line-up surfaced back on to the touring circuit. Once again in victorious fashion the foursome loaded their gear and traversed the US and Europe complete with a spot on the prestigious Download Festival in the UK. Today Broken Valley, their new release on Epic Records, houses the best of what their catalog has to offer. Keith's voice brews rich melancholy with a white hot delivery, Joey's guitar is a juggernaut of skill and spirit, Alan's earth splitting rhythms and Sal's engrossing drumming. Broken Valley brims with a texture as vast as New York's character and ultimately, the record's artistry filling even supersedes the void that Stone Temple Pilots' breakup left behind. These veterans in their own right have once again revamped the face of a bloated, copycat rock scene. Full Interview |

New Music: Every Time I Die - "Bored Stiff"
|
| 07 July 2005 |
Every Time I Die will
drop their new album, Gutter Phenomenon, on August 23rd through Ferret.
In anticipation of the release, you can now download an mp3
of the cut "Bored Stiff."
Since the release of 2003's Hot Damn!, ETID have enjoyed stints on Ozzfest 2004's second stage, as well as sharing the stage, and selling out venues, with Dillinger Escape Plan, Lamb Of God, Unearth, and As I Lay Dying. Hot Damn! was a breakthrough record for ETID, and was the record that turned people's heads. But
Gutter Phenomenon is the Every Time I Die Record, quite possibly the yardstick by which their career will be measured.
"The last record made people notice us," says singer/wily lyricist Buckley. "This record will keep people's heads turned in our direction. We have memorable parts, and choruses, and hooks that are so much more memorable and show that we have graduated to a profound level, as musicians. We're not just throwing riffs together."
Buckley's not kidding. On Gutter Phenomenon, ETID have taken the subtle Southern riff influence, which can be detected by a finely trained and tuned ear on Hot Damn!, and made it a crucial elements of their sound. Dirty guitar tones are quite prominent throughout
Gutter Phenomenon. "We listen to a lot of Motorhead, Black Crowes, and Thin Lizzy," Buckley freely admits. "We got into the groove. The scene we're a part of is inundated with hardcore bands, so we listened to classic rock." Buckley also took vocal lessons to expand his range, and he pulls off things he never thought he could, vocally-speaking, because of his training. He says his style is now "exactly what I've been trying to do, and now I'm doing right."
"It is mature," Buckley exclaims, when asked if he thinks that ETID have grown up and developed. "But it still has the lyrics that are as cynical and sarcastic as ever." So just because Every Time I Die have grown up a little, they haven't lost their notorious sense of humor, and their biting, intelligently acidic lyrical bend nor have they given up their crazy on-stage antics.
"It's too easy to rest on your laurels and make the same record again," Buckley says. "We have the right to not make sense, but you can only do that for so long. We want to stand out as a band. So many sounds the same. Look at the Hellfest line up. There are 100,000 bands, and unless you're a headliner, you have to find some way to stand out, and you can't stand out just by being a spastic metal band. You can't just worry about the last live performance you gave. A record has to hold your attention, and you can't be remembered only while you're performing." Lucky for ETID, not only does their record hold you hostage with its blazing intensity, so do their performances. |
Release: Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists - In Stores September 20th
|
| 07 July 2005 |
Disturbed
are preparing to raise Ten Thousand Fists--their first studio album in three years--September
20th on Warner Bros Records. Driven to take their unique, hard rock sound to new
creative heights, Disturbed have shaped an album that lead singer David Draiman says “seems to fuse the brutality and
darkness of The Sickness with the added melodic nature and complexity of Believe (Billboard.com, 6/21/05)." Recorded in the band’s hometown of Chicago, the
14-track album was produced by Johnny K, who also guided 2000’s The Sickness
and 2002’s Believe. A modern hard rock essential, The Sickness
has sold 3.4 million copies while the equally evocative and
platinum-plus-selling Believe debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top
200 chart. On Ten Thousand Fists, Draiman’s commanding,
unchained vocals soar to exorcize the emotions of social anxieties, culture
clashes and world events. Drummer Mike Wengren’s thunderous attacks and
tribal double-bass beats are balanced by guitarist Dan Donegan’s brutal
crunch with siren leads. Donegan--who has introduced guitar solos to the band’s
sound in the new release--told Westwood One (6/30/05) “I think each
time we come out we definitely have to surpass what we’ve done before…We
continue to push ourselves to where there’s no limits.” Leading up to the album’s release,
Disturbed has made the song “Guarded” available now on iTunes and at metal and rock stations
everywhere. The title track will be featured in EA Sports’ highly anticipated
“Madden 2006” football game, while the first single "Stricken" will go to radio in late July. Just as Disturbed
pack an incredible punch on their
albums, they’re known for explosive performances that feed off of the energy of
their fans. Stay tuned for news about Disturbed shows that will precede the
release of Ten Thousand Fists.

New Music: Chimaira - Chimaira - In Stores August 9th
|
| 05 July 2005 |

“This isn't a ’first listen’ record,” says Chimaira frontman Mark
Hunter. “The songs will stick in your head for the rest of your life,
but it’s not dumbed down. People are going to listen and say, 'This is
interesting. I need to hear it again.' By the third time they listen,
they will go, ’Whoa, I ’get’ it.’” Those are bold statements, but Hunter and Chimaira thoroughly back it up on their new album, appropriately titled Chimaira
(due out August 9th). It’s fitting that this wrecking crew have named their third full length, Chimaira.
That’s because this Cleveland sextet have fine tuned and honed their
style so deftly, that this album truly represents everything they were,
everything they are, and everything they are poised to become once this
monster is unleashed on the heavy metal world. Chimaira
is Chimaira, from the opening note of the brain damagingly heavy
“Nothing Remains,” which Hunter reveals was written the day Dimebag
Darrell was murdered, saying “The song has nothing to do with the
situation, but musically, it’s brutal and anger-filled, and the
shooting brought out the feelings. We sat in the practice space,
staring at the ground for an hour, when Rob picked up his guitar, and
the song was just born.” The heaviness quotient doesn't lessen, thanks
to the brutal breakdown present on “Save Ourselves,” which feels like a
mortar grinding your skull and bones into a fine powder. “Salvation” is
the album’s most melodic song, due in part to the enormous chorus. The
album’s closer is the epic, dynamic mindfuck called “Lazarus.” It's the
“most roller coaster track. It’s not about the Biblical character, but
a friend who committed suicide 11 years ago. It’s the most personal
song I've ever written, and I got it out of my system,” Hunter says,
admitting he envisions kids listening to the song on headphones, to
fully absorb it. Hunter continues, saying, “The lyrics are
really personal, and fans looking for a ’Fuck you,’ or a ’Power Trip’
type song will be disappointed. This is more thought-out, more
realistic. I thought it was time to be upfront in my lyrics and strip
away the ambiguity.” That makes the lyrics a perfect complement to the
music, which directly connects like a series of punches to the groin.

Release: Cold - A Different Kind Of Pain - In Stores August 30th
|
| 05 July 2005 |
 Florida-based hard rockers Cold
return to spotlight with their fourth studio record A Different Kind
of Pain. The introspective new album will be released on Lava
Records, a division of the Warner Music Group, on August 30th.
After a two year hiatus since their Gold-selling previous album Year of
the Spider, Cold triumphantly return with their most eloquent album to date.
A Different Kind of Pain demonstrates the band’s tremendous growth as
songwriters and was recorded at Bearsville Studios in upstate New York and
Studio Barbbarosa in Virginia. The disc was produced by Michael "
Elvis" Baskette (Chevelle, Iggy Pop, and Puddle of Mudd) and mixed by Ben
Grosse.
A Different Kind of Pain is fraught with insight into the band’s
recent upheavals, which include tackling personal demons, lineup changes and
facing immortality. Determined to confront their fears, the band used the
recording of the album as an outlet for their pain. "Making this
record wasn’t just about dealing with the darkness, it was a healing
process," remarked singer Scooter Ward. "Everyone who was
involved and everybody who was around us at the time was changed by this
album."
The track listing for the album runs as follows:
1. Back Home
2. Feel It In Your Heart
3. Anatomy Of A Title Wave
4. A Different Kind of Pain
5. Another Pill
6. Happens All The Time
7. When Heaven’s Not Far Away
8. God’s Song
9. When Angels Fly Away
10. Tell Me Why
11. Ocean |

The Question, at Purevolume.com.
The impressive new tracks are "Studying Politics" and "So Cold I Could See My
Breath." You can now download "Studying Politics" at iTunes.
The new album will be in stores on August 2nd through Tooth & Nail.
In 2004, South Carolina natives, Emery did something amazing: They went from near obscurity to undeniable success and popularity, all in a year’s time. What spurred their sudden fame was a combination of January 2004’s release of their critically acclaimed debut,
The Weak’s End, and a non-stop tour schedule, including stints with everyone from Hawthorne Heights to Eighteen Visions. Now having sold over 60,000 copies of their debut release, Emery are gearing up for their new release
The Question which is more focused, profoundly mature, and so undeniably passionate that no one will be questioning Emery’s potential.
Catch Emery this summer on the Smartpunk stage at Warped Tour. |
Release: Bullet For My Valentine - Hand of Blood - In Stores August 23rd
|
| 29 June 2005 |
The Trustkill Records roster has gone transatlantic with their latest signing of Welsh quartet
Bullet For My
Valentine. The band will be releasing the Hand of Blood EP in the US on August 23rd and plan a stateside tour for the same month. Though the band has drawn comparisons to Funeral For A Friend and UK label mates Lost Prophets, the band’s debut EP which was produced and mixed by Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Fear Factory, Slipknot) already has the BBC proclaiming that “Bullet For My Valentine rock much harder, much louder.” The band is driven by an old school metallic punch nurtured by years of growing up on Metallica and Iron Maiden. This is offset by frenzied, often angst-like screamed vocals that lend a hardcore edge. Blended in the mix, are singer Matt Tuck’s lyrics which are by turns dark and romantic.
UK fans already got a taste when the band won the coveted supporting slot on metal giants Chimaira’s UK tour. Soon after, the band was tapped to play the Download Festival which showcases the best of hard rock and metal. There, they shared the stage with the likes of Lamb of God, In Flames and Unearth. “We drove up there at dawn with music cranked right up to 11,” says bassist Jason James. “There we were at 10 in the morning, standing on the main-stage with beers in our hands. It was like, ’Well, this is it, boys. This is where we’re meant to be.’”
The band, comprised of vocalist Tuck, guitarist Michael “Padge” Padget, drummer Michael “Moose” Thomas and bassist James, began as Jeff Killed John. The band was due to record when, the day before entering the studio, their bassist up and quit. “Everything went completely tits up, and it was a really big kick in the balls but it made us stronger,” says Tuck.
The band soon shed their regrettable moniker and any trace of former nu-metal stylings and emerged as Bullet For My Valentine. Soon, major labels came a-calling and after turning down deals including one from Roadrunner Europe, the band settled with Sony UK. Shopping for a home across the pond, the band turned to Trustkill, a major name in independent metal and hardcore. Expect their debut full-length on Trustkill Records due out on Valentines Day 2006!. |

Preview: Haste The Day - When Everything Falls
|
| 27 June 2005 |
Haste
The Day reappear with their sophomore release on Solid State Records, dubbed
When Everything Falls. The
second entry from the Indiana-born ensemble is a caustic blend of metal,
hardcore and screamo. Vocally, the album rotates between singer Jimmy Ryan’s
hissing voice that recalls Zao luminary Daniel Weyandt and the pure melodic
choruses that sound at ease on songs like “Walls And Fear.” The convoluted canvas of When Everything Falls is painted with jagged, jarring riffs and has a generally stark, brisk feel to it. The album is reminiscent of Atreyu’s Suicide Notes And Butterfly Kisses at times, with a similar execution and contrast between the heavier and more melodic moments. Haste The Day is right at home for those that dig the aforementioned acts, as well as As I Lay Dying or the heavier moments of Underoath, Beloved and Dead Poetic. Check out new tracks from Haste The Day at Purevolume.com. |
Preview: Throwdown - Vendetta
|
| 26 June 2005 |
Throwdown strikes with vengeance and purpose on their pummeling new disc,
Vendetta, on Trustkill Records. The urgent new outing from Throwdown is a hostile endeavor, a call-to-arms with cuts like the title track that beckons, “This is war. This is pure hostility. This is vengeance. This is all that's driving me."
It is quite clear that Throwdown didn’t grow up in the Orange County that is portrayed on the television hit "The O.C." Rather than syrupy, introverted indie rock that you might find on a sunny soundtrack for "The O.C.," Throwdown unleash the musical equivalent to a bloody beating. Underneath the dense musical attack there is an inescapable anger and frustration, like a volcano bubbling toward erruption.
Crafted by renowned metal producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall), Vendetta is full of seriously pissed-off, pit-invoking anthems. There is no sugar coating here, only pure and punishing O.C. hardcore at its finest and most brutal. Check out two mp3s from Vendetta here. |
Preview: CKY - an Answer can be found
|
| 26 June 2005 |
Right from the first note, you know you are listening to CKY. That muddy, not-quite-stoner-rock sound is synonymous with the CKY experience. an Answer can be found (out June 28th on Island) launches with “Suddenly Tragic,” a song that sounds like familiar CKY, yet you can’t help but be relieved that the follow-up to the classic Infiltrate.Destroy.Rebuild
is finally here. The classic guitar lines of Chad Ginsburg meld with the smoky voice of Deron Miller as he resonates with the resounding chorus, “Why put the gun to your head if you’re already dead.”
After tracks like “The Way You Lived” and “Dressed In Decay” introduce
the new album, an Answer can be found kicks into gear with the first single “Familiar Reason.” The infectious cut rocks out with a relaxed tempo, chalk full of Ginsburg’s memorable guitar work. “Triple Manic State” drives with thick, choppy riffs and Miller’s trademark howl, coupled with
the vibrant drumming of Jess Margera.
an Answer can be found is a solid return for CKY, an album that showcases
why CKY is always a force to be reckoned with, giving us a new palette of sounds
to sink our teeth into. Listen to the first single “Familiar Realm” here. | |
Live: 30 Seconds To Mars @ The Roxy
|
| 26 June 2005 |
30 Seconds To Mars dawned their low-key theatrics for a special show at the Roxy in West Hollywood, CA on Saturday night. The band played solid standbys from their self titled debut and showcased songs from their forthcoming new album, A Beautiful Lie, due out on August 16th. It wouldn’t be a 30 Seconds To Mars show in Hollywood without the interesting mix of hardcore fans, musicians and actors. In attendance checking out the set was Bert McCracken from The Used, Anthony Kiedis from the
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Brandon Boyd & Mike Einziger from Incubus, Lindsay Lohan, Jason Lee and Ashley
Olsen. The set began with “End Of The Beginning” and “Edge
Of The Earth,” with the fans sing-along almost eclipsing the vocals of singer
Jared Leto. The band then went into an uplifting and inspired version of their
brand new single “Attack.” Incubus axe man Mike Einziger joined 30 Seconds
To Mars on the atmospheric new track “Was It a Dream.” Leto closed the show with a solo version of "Capricorn" before being
joined by the rest of the band for the impressive new song "The
Fantasy." Leto and crew were solid in their Hollywood return after finishing up their recent headlining tour. 30 Seconds To Mars will hit the road with Chevelle and Taproot in July, followed by a run with The Used and Glassjaw starting August 13th. Make sure to get there early to see 30 Seconds To Mars. The set included:
End Of The Beginning
Edge Of The Earth
Attack
The
Mission
93 Million Miles
Was It A Dream
Battle

A Beautiful Lie
Buddha For Mary

Preview: Darkest Hour - Undoing Ruin
|
| 26 June 2005 |
Darkest
Hour is back with their most accomplished effort to date, Undoing Ruin, in stores June 28th through Victory Records. The coordinated assault outlined on Undoing Ruin is a potent and direct undertaking, drifting away from the manic breaks that peppered previous outings by Darkest Hour. The hardcore heavyweights worked with Devin Townsend of Strapping Young Lad, who helped the band hone their sound into a more concise package.
The album commences with the moody tempos of "With A Thousand Words To Say
But One," a carefully constructed cut that features involving guitar lines
and encompassing, enraged vocals over and an underlying melodic undertow. The
effort picks up with the pummeling madness of "This Will Outlive Us,"
and does not let up until the 10-track effort is completed. Undoing Ruin is calculating, intricate and varied in its delivery of top-notch heavy music. Download mp3s from Undoing Ruin and check out the video for "Convalescence" here. |

Release: Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV: Volume 1. From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
|
| 24 June 2005 |
 The
intricate title of the third album from Coheed
and Cambia, Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: Volume 1. From Fear Through
the Eyes of Madness, intimates the density and complexity of the music it
contains. The follow-up to In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 will be
released on September 20th through Columbia Records.
The upcoming album is also the first half of the third installment of the band’s daringly ambitious prog-rock/sci-fi opus recounting the exploits of young Claudio Kilgannon, who is out to avenge the death of his three siblings and parents (Coheed and Cambria). The saga began with the band’s 2002 debut, Second Stage Turbine Blade, and will eventually end with a prequel, where the fans will find out how it really began. Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV: Volume 1 has a twist, though: This one steps outside the story and focuses on the writer
of the tale, and how the goings-on in his own life affect the outcome of the
story he’s in the midst of telling.
Preceding the new album will be a 32-page comic loosely based on Second
Stage Turbine Blade and published by Sanchez’s graphic-arts company, Evil
Ink, with an initial run of 40,000. The provocative comic book will be featured
at this summer’s annual San Diego Comic Con, which will host a Coheed booth and
a performance by the band. There will also be signings at L.A.’s Golden Apple,
Bill Haley’s Universe in New York and Chicago Comics.
The year will culminate with the publication of a lavish, 112-page graphic novel encompassing the full Good Apollo...IV story.
The band’s summer tour of the U.S. and Canada (dates below) will include
three special shows in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago; during each, they'll
play 40 minutes acoustically, following it with a full rock show. Coheed and
Cambia will also appear at festivals in Japan and Europe, where they have rabid
followings. On Aug. 6, they’ll perform at the Latin Alternative Music Conference in New York’s Central Park as part of the Summerstage Performance series, and they’ll perform this fall at CMJ Music Marathon.

Tour: Circa Survive Added To Warped Tour (8/9-8/15)
|
| 24 June 2005 |
Circa
Survive have been added to the Vans Warped Tour and will appear on the
Ernie Ball Stage alongside bands like Bleed The Dream and Big D and The Kids
Table. These dates cap off a nonstop touring run that began even before the
release of their debut Juturna. Most recently, the band has been on a
nationwide tour with Say Anything and Emanuel which was preceded by a US tour
directly supporting Dredg. The band was also recently asked to open for Muse
on a date of their US tour.
Though Circa Survive formed less than a year ago, their brand of atmospheric
and spacey post hardcore has already garnered notable attention. On the
first day of its release, Juturna sold 2,500 copies, propelling the
album to #9 on Billboard’s New Artist/Heatseekers Chart. Assembled
from former hardcore groups such as This Day Forward, Saosin and Taken, the
music on Circa Survive’s debut possesses shimmering guitars and soaring
melodies with a depth of feeling that is driven home by the singer Anthony
Green’s distinct and intense voice.
Circa Survive was formed when Green joined forces with his childhood friend
Colin Frangicetto (guitar). At the time Frangicetto’s band, This Day
Forward, broke up after seven years together and Green was in California-based
Saosin, already a rising star in metalcore circles. When Green returned
home to Philadelphia on a stopover, he and Frangicetto jammed together for
fun. The resulting session was enough to cement Green’s belief in this
bedroom music project and was also enough to get Frangicetto to drop out of
school. Green saw no reason to go back to the west coast and
spontaneously got off his plane en route to return to Philadelphia without
ever picking up his belongings and clothes. This is the passion of the
musicians here, an energy which is transmutable enough through performance and
recording to inspire equal responses from fans burning up internet chat rooms
and driving hours to see the band. The band, who is rounded out by
Brendan Ekstrom (guitar), Nick Beard (bass) and Steve Clifford (drums), have
already clocked road dates with groups as disparate as Gatsby’s American
Dream, Tsunami Bomb, Bear Vs Shark and Lucero.

New Music: Boys Night Out - "Medicating"
|
| 23 June 2005 |
Boys
Night Out have added the new song "Medicating" to Purevolume.com.
Boys Night Out’s sophomore LP, Trainwreck, hits the streets everywhere on July 26th through Ferret.
From the second the band’s sophomore album, Trainwreck, opens, with its cascading instrumental overture and its eerie voiceover of a physician diagnosing his patient, you can sense the arrival of something big, powerful-and where this band is concerned, previously unexplored.
The album started as a story the guitarist, Jeff Davis, had written-a typically dark yet surprisingly empathetic tale of love, murder, mental anguish and creative reawakening-then became the catalyst for the album they’d start writing. Now, that story has been broken down into 12 sections, which are
Trainwreck’s 12 songs.
The metallic, mathy, prog-rock dynamics of “Dreaming” set the album’s tone early on, their dark, descending guitar lines eerily complementing the physical and emotional collapse of the patient at the center of the album's story. At the same time, longtime fans should feel right at home with songs like “Medicating,” which put the guitar harmonies, handclaps and sing-along choruses of classic BNO into a thrilling new context. Yes,
Trainwreck is the album where these Boys officially grow up, the disc where their hopes, ambitions and darkest secrets collide to make the statement they’ve always had in them. Trainwreck is now available for preorder. The album will be issued on July 26th, but preorders will begin shipping July 21st. All preorders will receive a limited edition signed poster SET. The set includes 3 11x17 posters based off the stunning Trainwreck album art. You can see the posters and preorder Trainwreck

New Music: Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw
|
| 22 June 2005 |
Unhindered by the impositions of the vocal yoke, Chicago instro-sorcerers
Pelican transcend the limits of time and space to expound upon the stunning finesse and painstaking subtlety with which they command their already indelible sonic signature. Restoring instrumental composition to its former glory is no insignificant task, and to do so with such remarkable authority and presence is a testament to the sheer will and unmitigated talent of
Pelican's membership. Levying cinematic melody upon glacial heaviness, they achieve the sort of inevitability usually reserved for weather systems and natural disasters. Channeling the seasonal progressions of various far-flung landscapes, the sounds of Pelican are easily adaptable to both the active and passive listening experience, but their harmonic minutiae are best appreciated in a high-volume stereophonic headphone scenario.
With their newest epic, The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw
(out July 12th on Hydra Head), Pelican establish themselves as an inimitable force of nature, soaring skyward in triumph toward some celestial nadir, shepherding out the frost with a wash of seismic rumblings. Acoustic guitars take their place beside
Pelican's traditional (read: highly amplified) power-drone majesty; the heavens part to allow full deliverance of tidal euphony, awe-inspiring instrumental anthems, and bucolic
narco-rhythms.

Video: A Life Once Lost - "Vulture"

Every Time I Die and Norma Jean. With his latest undertaking, the video for
"Vulture" by A
Life Once Lost, Doane has truly topped himself. The staggering video looks
like an excerpt from a chase scene in a big-budget Hollywood film, integrating
intense performance footage from the band. Not even the bloated multi-million
dollar videos from Puff Daddy in the late 90s were this engaging. Check out the video

|
| 21 June 2005 |

Jones (Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, Melvins, Jawbox) to record their second full-length.
Shredding guitars, clean drumbeats, and bass that lays down a smooth path
permeate the Fall Of Troy sound. Take in the first offering from the new LP by heading
over to Purevolume to hear "Whacko Jacko Steals The Elephant".

Preview: As Cities Burn - Son, I Loved You At Your Darkest
|
| 20 June 2005 |
 Solid
State Records are
consistent in their delivery of heavy-minded artists that have a knack for
artfully integrating melodic elements. The Solid State
roster includes the likes of Underoath, Norma Jean, The Chariot, Dead Poetic,
Demon Hunter, He Is Legend and Showbread, among others. The latest entry to the
Solid State fold, As Cities
Burn, figure well
into the mix with their debut offering, Son, I Loved You At Your
Darkest. As Cities Burn strike with tension-filled tracks like "Thus
From My Lips, By Yours, My Sin Is Purged" and segue smoothly to gutwrenching ballads
like "The Widow". The vocals bring to mind Spencer Chamberlain of
Underoath and Anthony Green of Circa Survive, without sounding derivative. The
10-track offering is a solid, varied affair with well-rounded songs for every mood. It
is safe to say that if you have worn out your Underoath cd, or the first record
from A Static Lullaby, then As Cities Burn will provide you with that same catharsis.
Although carrying some of the same attributes as the aforementioned artists, As
Cities Burn stand strongly on their own footing with a record that comes off as
genuine, unforced and well-made.
Check out the e-card to get an idea of what As Cities
Burn are all about. Chances are if you dig what Solid State
has issued in the past, you will get into this. |

Preview: Dredg - Catch Without Arms
|
| 17 June 2005 |
Catch Without Arms rings with optimism and care, carefully crafted and executed with sonic elegance provided by producer
Terry Date (Deftones, Staind). Dredg
have an understated power, reflectively unleashed in architecturally sound compositions like "Bug Eyes" and
"Catch Without Arms". While some of their material in the past may have been too obscure for some, Dredg have finally realized their potential
with lush, captivating songs and a haunting, yet calming sound that only Dredg can pull off. There has always been this powerful spiritual quality
about Dredg, few bands can pull off the type of epic music that seems to come
so naturally for Dredg. In our 2001 feature that documented the most
anticipated records of 2002, in that case being El Cielo, we
stated, "Since releasing their independent debut Leitmotif
in 1999, Dredg has made listeners speechless with the poetry of their spiritual
musical expressions." I think it is fair to say that Catch
Without Arms will have the same effect.

Shoutweb Update, Looking For A Few Unsigned Bands
|
| 17 June 2005 |
Shoutweb is currently undergoing a wealth of changes. Please stay tuned to the site in the coming days and weeks for many new renovations. The Shoutweb chart will be relaunching shortly. We are very excited about many releases this summer and fall. Thanks for your understanding. Check out the expanded news and features section below, and preview a lot of upcoming releases on the left panel. We are also looking for new, unique and challenging unsigned artists to feature on Shoutweb. If you are in an unsigned band, or there are bands in your area that you can suggest, please email our new guy Shawn here. Any and all suggestions, even the really bad ones, are very much appreciated. We know there has to be a few bands out there that are not playing the same old [insert your least favorite trendy genre here]. [Ed. Note] Hey, we fully admit we are sometimes guilty of perpetuating musical stereotypes and artists that sound like they formed at the same family reunion (or bred in the same gene pool). You should hear most of the bands we receive that do not go up on the site though, you would probably try to stab out your ear drums. Think of us as a filtering system. We listen to it so you don’t have to. In the end, Shoutweb is just a few music fans making recommendations to other music fans. If we were trying to make a lot of money (we all have day jobs), we would likely be spending our time trying to put together the next Myspace, pop punk label or boy band (they are back you know). We have featured many great bands in their infancy and look forward to doing the same in the future. |
Tour: Stretch Arm Strong, Haste The Day, Kane Hodder
|
| 17 June 2005 |
Stretch
Arm Strong will be embarking on a co-headlining tour with Haste The Day beginning July 26th. The tour, dubbed
The Summer Free Fall Tour, is in support of Stretch Arm Strong’s new release, Free
At Last, out September 13th on We Put Out Records. Still Remains will be direct support with Kane Hodder opening up each night.
"It’s going to be so amazing back out on tour in the
US
. It’s the first time we’ve toured with these bands, our friends in Haste The
Day and our soon to be new friends, Still Remains and Kane Hodder. We’re really psyched to be sharing the stage with these guys and are looking forward to playing to some new kids as well as our loyal fans," comments Chris McLane from SAS.
Produced by James Paul Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Underoath, Academy Is) Free
At Last is the fourth full length from the
South Carolina
band and the premiere release from We Put Out Records. Extensive roadwork with
Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Rise Against, Norma Jean, Pennywise and others have built a solid fan base and set the stage for what promises to be their most diverse and inspired work to date. "These songs are without a doubt the best we’ve done. The excitement, the energy and the passion we have for this record is unparallel to anything we’ve ever experienced." remarks McLane. |
Preview: Stutterfly - And We Are Bled Of Color
|
| 17 June 2005 |
It seems like just yesterday we started listening to Stutterfly, though in all reality it has been a few years now. The first time we had the opportunity to see Stutterfly live was opening for one of the The Used’s first shows, at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA. Seeing Stutterfly live is a beautiful mess, we mean that in a good way by the way. The boys from Canada have been plugging away, refining their songs, and are finally set to release their long-awaited major label debut on Tuesday, June 21st. Although And We Are Bled Of Color features many of the same songs that we were listening to well over three years ago, they still sound as relevant today as they did back then, maybe even more so now. "Gun In Hand" and "Silent Scream" are painfully real songs, chalk full of tension, angst and a snarling power. You know the sound, melodic post hardcore with a few bells and whistles, Stutterfly just does it better than most. Don’t take our word for it though, check out the media player featuring cuts from the record and the video for "Gun In Hand". If you happen to be hitting up the Warped Tour anywhere between June 18th through July 4th, make sure to seek out their set. Check out stutterfly.com for more info and downloads. |
In The Studio: With Honor Recording New Victory Album
|
| 17 June 2005 |
With Honor are holed up with Brian McTernan at Salad Days studios in Maryland as we speak, recording their Victory Records debut,
This Is Our Revenge. The album is in stores October 18th - fans of the old school hardcore of Comeback Kid and Bane are going to love With Honor. Formed in 2002, the group has a created a powerful and unique style of spirited hardcore with melody. Wasting no time after their formation,
With Honor teamed up with Stillborn Records to release their self-titled debut and more notably
the 2004 release Heart Means Everything. WITH HONOR has toured incessantly in support of the aforementioned releases with bands like Hatebreed, Sick Of It All, and H20 and has blown fans away at festivals like New England Metalfest and
Hellfest. |
Most Anticipated: HIM
|
| 17 June 2005 |
HIM – Dark Light (Sire) Release: September 27 The stars are beginning to align for Finish love metal quintet HIM. The biggest underground band in the U.S., and already stars in their native Europe, will unleash their most important album to date with
Dark Light. The phenomenon of HIM has been nothing short of amazing, with many U.S. converts having discovered the band on old CKY dvds, imports and through good old word-of-mouth. Now that the States have finally caught up to the rest of the world, HIM will mark the release of their latest opus with a worldwide release on September 26th
(Europe) and 27th (U.S.) through new label Sire. If new songs like “Killing Loneliness” and “Vampire Heart” are any indication, Dark Light will feature the same cinematic, epic, goth-inspired sound that the band has made classic. If you are already a fan, you probably know everything there is to know about HIM. If you have yet to convert, there is plenty of time this summer to catch up before the new album drops in September. We recommend the 2003 release Love Metal or their best collection, And Love Said No: Greatest Hits 1997-2004. |
Most Anticipated: Against Me!
|
| 17 June 2005 |
Against Me! –
Searching For A (Rumored) Former Clarity (Fat Wreck)
Release: September 6 Late last year new demos from Against Me! leaked in the form of the “Stolen Demo”. The new songs, which have been given a variety of names by the band’s devout base, press beyond the sound cemented on their potent previous LP, As The Eternal Cowboy, and show Against Me! at their most urgent and intense. Fan-titled songs “Problems” and “How Long Can You Go” are some of the most vital songs we’ve heard from any band in ages. Whether these songs will see the light of day on the new album remains to be seen, but new songs that the band has been playing live on their most recent tour, including the soon to be classics “Violence,” “Condoleeza” and “Justin,” show glimpses of greatness. If producer J. Robbins (Jets To Brazil, Promise Ring) was able to capture just a sliver of Against Me’s explosive live show during the recording sessions, you are in for one of the best albums of 2005. If you are saying to yourself, Against who?, do yourself a big favor and check out Against Me’s classic Crime EP and their two full-lengths; As The Eternal Cowboy and Reinventing Axel
Rose. |

Vaux –
Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice (Atlantic) Release: August/September In 2002, a small, indiscriminate package came into the office from a Denver, CO based band that would later be known as Vaux. The four songs on the EP, later released on Volcom under the title On Life; Living were cold, yet captivating. There was certainly something there, we gave it a few spins, but quickly forgot about it when My Chemical Romance’s I Brought You My Bullets… came along and blindsided us. Vaux followed with the 2003 opus There Must Be Some Way To Stop Them, an album that, by very definition, rocked. There was such an explosive nature to that record, just an absolutely invigorating post-hardcore record. To this day it is still hard to imagine why that record didn’t set the world on fire. None the less, it secured Vaux a deal with Atlantic Records and was followed with the Plague Music EP on Equal Vision in 2004. Fast-forward to today, we still can’t stop listening to There Must Be Some Way To Stop Them. Every time we spin that record, we can only imagine what is in store with the band’s major label debut, Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice. It would baffle us if Vaux doesn’t become one of the biggest rock bands within the next two years, on the level of a My Chemical Romance. The new track “Identity Theft” sounds solid with the top-notch sonic production of Garret Lee (U2, Snow Patrol). Listen to the new cut on the Black By Popular Demand sampler for a taste of what to expect. |

As if it needs to be said, Trent Reznor and cohorts will be barreling through the hits while they showcases songs from their well-received

Most Anticipated: The Like
|
| 17 June 2005 |
The Like – tba (Geffen) Release:
September 13 Los Angeles indie rock trio The Like are preparing to release their debut album this fall on Geffen. The Like have been playing the Hollywood and Silverlake club scene for the last few years, honing their craft and putting out three self-released EPs. The band recently opened the Alternative Press 20th Anniversary Party, impressing even the most fickle My Chemical Romance and Transplants fans. Having seen The Like play around the L.A. area for the last couple years, we have certainly seen them come a long way, with the new material sounding quite impressive. Think delicate indie rock that might fit well between Straylight Run and Eisley, a very subtle and timeless sound. The Like recorded with the incomparable John Goodmanson (The Blood Brothers, Blonde Redhead, Death Cab for Cutie) on their forthcoming full-length, which has us very much enthused. If you talk to a typical Shoutweb band about their biggest influences or what they are listening to the most, you aren’t likely to get a list of the usual rock, punk and metal mainstays. We could not even begin to count the amount of singers out there that cite Bjork as their biggest influence. With that being said, when we’re relaxing, kicking back
in our digs, it is generally not Dillinger Escape Plan blasting through the speakers. You’re very likely going to hear The Like, Fiona Apple,
Anberlin, Sigur Rós, Mogwai or something along those lines. We know many Shoutweb users are the same, balancing out the loud with the lighter side. We’re admittedly obsessed with Mastodon and ISIS, but it’s not exactly our idea of music to play on a Sunday afternoon or before going to bed. What can we say, we like The Like. If it sounds like something that you can get into, we recommend checking out the band’s
Myspace page to hear two tracks
from their previous EPs. |
Most Anticipated: Megan McCauley
|
| 17 June 2005 |
Megan McCauley – tba (Wind-Up) Release: August 16 We remember getting emails a long time ago from our Shoutweb users in Arkansas about this local band that they were really hot on. We checked them out, thought there was something there and put something up on them. We didn’t hear much about them after that, until about a year later when the label that ended up signing them, Wind-Up, contacted us about their forthcoming record. Our reply: “Evanescence, oh yeah, that band from Arkansas.” The rest of course is history, and Evanescence has become the biggest female-fronted rock band in existence. Those Shoutweb kids in Arkansas knew what was up. The very talented a&r folks at Wind-Up have done it again, nabbing a female artist by the name of Megan McCauley. In listening to several cuts from Megan, it’s easy to say that she will be giving Amy Lee of Evanescence and Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil a run for their money in the category of top female rock singers. We knew there was something unique with Evanescence back in the old mp3.com days and upon hearing Fallen and there is certainly that same unique, attracting quality with the music of Megan McCauley. At just 16 years of age, Megan McCauley has a very mature vocal delivery and we can’t help but be impressed when we listen to her tracks “Die For You” (from the Fantastic Four Soundtrack) and “Wonder” (from the Elektra soundtrack). There is just something really legitimate and genuine there. Check out tracks from Megan over at her web site, meganmccauley.com. If Evanescence
can sell millions of copies, we certainly can’t see why Megan McCauley couldn’t do the same.
